TRICK OR TREAT?

The Reserve Bank has handed out a treat... but will interest rates come back to haunt us?

The Reserve Bank surprised economists this week by holding the Official Cash Rate (OCR) at 2.75%.

While the decision offers some short-term relief, the outlook suggests this pause may be temporary. The Reserve Bank has indicated that further OCR increases are likely, while bank economists are forecasting additional rises before the end of 2026 and into 2027.

What does this mean for the property market?

For buyers - With further interest rate increases anticipated, some buyers may be more inclined to purchase over the coming months rather than wait.

Securing a property now could provide an opportunity to lock in a fixed mortgage rate before borrowing costs potentially rise further.

For sellers - Sellers may benefit if that “buy and fix your mortgage now” opportunity translates into increased buyer activity

In summary: The coming months could present an interesting window for Auckland's property market, as buyers and sellers consider their next move ahead of potentially higher borrowing costs in 2027.
